St. Elmo Brady received a B.S. in Chemistry from Howard University (1908). He became the first African-American to receive a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Illinois (1916). He later served as Professor of Chemistry at Howard University until 1927. Afterwards, he worked at Fisk University heading their science division. Washington, DC - On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, Congressman Bill Foster spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives to recognize the life and contributions of Dr. St. Elmo Brady, the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry.
